Department Chair Training

The Provost has asked the Office of Academic Innovation & Leadership to organize and conduct a series of training opportunities for department chairs. The purpose of these training sessions is to provide specific instruction and discussion on topics and issues of most relevance to department chairs.

Recently a survey was conducted to determine the training topics most relevant to department chairs and the best dates and times to hold these training sessions. The results of the survey showed that the best date and time for the most number of people to attend were Thursdays from 2-3 pm. In addition, the results of the survey also showed that the top three topics to address in the sessions were a) Fostering a Collegial Environment: Guidelines for the Department Chair, b) Three Keys to Effective Decision-making for Academic Leaders, and c) Using Banner to Access Important Department Information.

The training sessions use a flip-classroom approach, i.e., participants will view a training video before the training session and the actual training session will focus on applying the information presented in the training video.

For the training sessions on Sep. 29 and Oct. 20, participants will view a training video developed by a company called Magna Publications before the actual training session. Dixie State University is currently paying a yearly subscription to Magna Publications that provides access to hundreds of professional development video seminars (for faculty, staff, and administrators) ranging in length from 20 to 90 minutes. These courses are available from a single click in a Canvas course.

The Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) has created a Canvas course (titled CTL Resources) with a link to the Magna Publications courses. Department Chairs should already be enrolled in the Canvas course. If you’re missing the course in Canvas (the course is not listed when you click on the Courses icon and then click on the “All Courses” link), you can self-enroll at https://dixie.instructure.com/enroll/E6DG6T

Specific instructions to access the professional development video seminars from Magna Publications link are listed below in each individual training session. If you have any questions, problems accessing the videos, or comments, please contact Bruce Harris, Executive Director of Academic Innovation and Leadership, at bruce.harris@dixie.edu or 435-879-4638. Thank you.
